Award Activity

Teach at the graduate or undergraduate level, advise on university curriculum and development, and offer other host institutions support as requested.

Conduct independent or collaborative research. For teaching/research awards, the ratio of grant activity should be 50/50.

A non exhaustive list of host institutions who have expressed interest in hosting a Fulbright scholar are included in the Locations section below, along with information about the host's preference for certain disciplines as well as specific grant activities that the host would expect a scholar to conduct.

Scholars selected for this award can choose to:
  • Advise and/or mentor students
  • Assist in faculty, curriculum, and/or program development
  • Conduct a professional and/or artistic project
  • Conduct a research project designated by the host institution
  • Conduct a research project of the applicant’s choosing
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses designated by the host institution
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses of the applicant’s choosing

Award Dates

All Scholars to Trinidad & Tobago are required to attend a pre-departure orientation, which typically takes place in late June, prior to beginning their Fulbright grant. 


Applicants to this award may propose affiliation with universities, research institutes and non-governmental organizations. The following host institutions have expressed interest in hosting Fulbright Scholars. Please note that applicants are not required to affiliate with one of these host institutions.

Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business: The University of the West Indies seeks a scholar in the field of business to teach graduate courses, facilitate executive and faculty training, conduct thesis advising, and supervise instructional activities such as cooperative work experiences, instructional management, tutoring, curriculum and course development. The scholar may conduct research in any area aligned to one of the Lok Jack Graduate School of Business Research Centers.

Additionally, the following departments at the University of the West Indies have expressed an interest in hosting a Fulbright Scholar to teach and collaborate on research in the identified fields of study:

  • Dept. of Life Sciences: Environmental Microbiology (Water quality testing using molecular based techniques);  Biological Anthropology (lectures in evolutionary biology; biodiversity and conservation; biology of animal behavior; the ecology of humans; science communication: human impact on the environment; Caribbean island ecology and biogeography)
  • Dept. of Behavioral Sciences:  Conflict Resolution; Social Work; Criminology/Psychology
  • Dept. of Computing and Information Technology (DCIT): Computer Science: Software Engineering; Data Analytics; Computer Security; Intelligent Systems

The University of Trinidad and Tobago seeks a scholar to teach undergraduate courses, deliver monthly seminars, and/or conduct research. The university prefers scholars in the following fields: Agriculture, Engineering, Criminology, Marine Sciences, Maritime Studies, and Education.

The University of the Southern Caribbean seeks a scholar to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, deliver monthly seminars and/or conduct research. The university prefers scholars in the following fields, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Psychology and Education.

Flex Option
Flex Description

The Flex Award is designed for scholars who require multiple visits to the host country. This option allows grants to be conducted over short segments, preferably during the fall and/or spring semesters. Interested applicants should clearly indicate plans for Flex in their project statement, including a project timeline. Flex grantees may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host country academic's community.

Flex grant parameters:
• Minimum length of the total grant is four months and the maximum is six months.
• Minimum length for any grant segment is one month and the maximum is three months.
• Two or three grant segments may be spread over one or two consecutive years.
• Flex awards are offered for teaching, teaching/research, and research grants.

Proposals outside of these fields are welcomed.

Activity Type

Research includes activities involving scientific research, qualitative research, quantitative research, and practice-based research, including artistic research. Research can take place in locations such as the laboratory, the field, the archives, or an artist residency. It can be experimental, clinical, or applied. It can include examining policies, systems, theories, methods, interactions, and works of art and music, with the objective to evaluate or develop new knowledge or works. Quantifiable (tangible) outcomes can include publications (books, journal articles, scripts, etc.), conference presentations, artistic and musical compositions, exhibitions, performances, films, and patents.


Teaching includes classroom teaching, as well as giving guest lectures, workshops, and seminars, and engaging in other related activities. Classroom teaching is typically at the undergraduate and graduate level, and courses may be designed by the scholar or prescribed by the host institution and may be taught or co-taught by the scholar. The teaching load varies by award, as well as the host institution. Scholars may also consult on building research capacity, advise graduate students, and assist with thesis advising.

Awards are open to those who have been working in the capacity of a teacher or scholar for more than seven, and less than 13, years.


Awards are open to individuals who have more than seven years of experience in a particular profession.
