Award Activity

Fulbright Canada scholars will conduct their own research, work collaboratively with new colleagues at the host institution, engage with students, and become involved in the local community. Applicants may propose teaching projects, research projects, or a combination of both in a wide range of subject areas.

Fulbright Canada Awards for American Scholars

Scholars selected for this award can choose to:
  • Advise and/or mentor students
  • Assist in faculty, curriculum, and/or program development
  • Conduct a professional and/or artistic project
  • Conduct a research project designated by the host institution
  • Conduct a research project of the applicant’s choosing
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses designated by the host institution
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses of the applicant’s choosing

Award Dates

Grants must begin in either September 2022 or January 2023 for one-semester grants; academic-year grants must begin in September 2022.

Affiliation can be with any university, government agency, or research institution in Canada.

Flex Description

The Flex Award is designed for scholars who require multiple visits to the host country. This option allows grants to be conducted over short segments, preferably during the fall and/or spring semesters. Interested applicants should clearly indicate plans for Flex in their project statement, including a project timeline. Flex grantees may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host country academic community.
Short-term Flex grants for teaching and research or research for two-month segments over two consecutive academic years are available during the fall and/or spring semesters with prior arrangement with the host institution.
Final approval of Flex grants will be contingent upon available funding.

Areas of Interest

While the competition is open to all disciplines, Fulbright Canada is particularly interested in encouraging research on contemporary issues relevant to Canada, the United States, and the relationship between the two countries. Applicants should also emphasize the need to be in residence in Canada to carry out the project.

Research includes activities involving scientific research, qualitative research, quantitative research, and practice-based research, including artistic research. Research can take place in locations such as the laboratory, the field, the archives, or an artist residency. It can be experimental, clinical, or applied. It can include examining policies, systems, theories, methods, interactions, and works of art and music, with the objective to evaluate or develop new knowledge or works. Quantifiable (tangible) outcomes can include publications (books, journal articles, scripts, etc.), conference presentations, artistic and musical compositions, exhibitions, performances, films, and patents.
