Award Details
Award Activity

Conduct research and/or teach in any discipline. Conduct faculty training or in-service teacher training as requested. Teaching load is a maximum of two courses at the undergraduate or graduate level.

For teaching/research projects, candidates should plan a 60/40 ratio of teaching to research.

Scholars selected for this award can choose to:
  • Advise and/or mentor students
  • Assist in faculty, curriculum, and/or program development
  • Conduct a research project designated by the host institution
  • Conduct a research project of the applicant’s choosing
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses designated by the host institution
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses of the applicant’s choosing

Award Dates

Grants may begin no earlier than August 2022. Semester-long grants should begin in August 2022 or January 2023.

All Scholars to El Salvador are required to attend a pre-departure orientation, which typically takes place in late June, prior to beginning their Fulbright grant. 


Any institution in El Salvador, including but not limited to, universities, NGOs, research centers. Please see "helpful links" section for a non-exhaustive list of potential host institutions. 

Flex Option
Flex Description

The Flex Award is designed for scholars who require multiple visits to the host country. This option allows grants to be conducted over short segments, preferably during the fall and/or spring semesters. Interested applicants should clearly indicate plans for Flex in their project statement, including a project timeline. Flex grantees may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host-country academic community. Flex grant parameters:

• Minimum length of the total grant is four months and the maximum is six months;
• Minimum length for any grant segment is one month and the maximum is three months;
• Two or three grant segments may be spread over one or two consecutive years; and
• Flex awards are offered for teaching, teaching/research, and research grants.

Areas of Interest

All disciplines will be considered. Below is a list of particular disciplines that are specific to host institutions. This list is not exhaustive and projects are not limited to these disciplines. 

UES Universidad de El Salvador:  Particular interest in candidates in the fields of Anthropology, Computer Science, Distance Learning, Education, Entrepreneurship, and Literature.

Engineering: Teach at the undergraduate level, supervise graduate students and offer training to faculty in new trends in engineering. Universities with interest in engineering include Universidad Don Bosco (UDB) and Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA).

Applications are sought in the following specializations for UDB: electrical engineering, electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, computer engineering and robotics.

Applications are sought for UCA in the following: process engineering and environmental sciences, electronics and informatics, energy and fluidic science and structural mechanics. Universidad Catolica de El Salvador (UNICAES) is now developing a textiles undergraduate degree program.

Business Administration: Teach one to two courses in any area of business management, business development or entrepreneurship at the graduate or undergraduate level. Offer training to faculty on new trends in business education, business incubation, and trends in connecting university courses to what is needed in business. Universities with interest in this field include Universidad de El Salvador (UES), Escuela Superior de Economia y Negocio (ESEN), José Simeón Cañas - Central American University (UCA) Universidad Tecnologica (UTEC) and Technological Institute of Central America (ITCA).

Activity Type

Research includes activities involving scientific research, qualitative research, quantitative research, and practice-based research, including artistic research. Research can take place in locations such as the laboratory, the field, the archives, or an artist residency. It can be experimental, clinical, or applied. It can include examining policies, systems, theories, methods, interactions, and works of art and music, with the objective to evaluate or develop new knowledge or works. Quantifiable (tangible) outcomes can include publications (books, journal articles, scripts, etc.), conference presentations, artistic and musical compositions, exhibitions, performances, films, and patents.


Teaching includes classroom teaching, as well as giving guest lectures, workshops, and seminars, and engaging in other related activities. Classroom teaching is typically at the undergraduate and graduate level, and courses may be designed by the scholar or prescribed by the host institution and may be taught or co-taught by the scholar. The teaching load varies by award, as well as the host institution. Scholars may also consult on building research capacity, advise graduate students, and assist with thesis advising.

Career Profile

Awards are open to individuals who have more than seven years of experience in an artistic profession.

Early Career Academics

Awards are open to those who have been working in the capacity of a teacher or scholar for no more than seven years.

Mid-Career Academics

Awards are open to those who have been working in the capacity of a teacher or scholar for more than seven, and less than 13, years.


Awards are open to individuals who have more than seven years of experience in a particular profession.

Senior Academics

Awards are open to those who have been working in the capacity of a teacher or scholar for more than 13 years.
