Award Activity

Teach two courses (classes meet once a week for 90 minutes) for advanced undergraduate or graduate students in area of interest, with details on content and format of courses to be arranged by host institution and professor. Other duties, such as tutorials and student advising, are negotiable and depend on the needs and expectations of the host institution and the manner in which the working relationship develops.

Scholars selected for this award can choose to:
  • Advise and/or mentor students
  • Assist in faculty, curriculum, and/or program development
  • Conduct a professional and/or artistic project
  • Conduct a research project designated by the host institution
  • Conduct a research project of the applicant’s choosing
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses designated by the host institution
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses of the applicant’s choosing

Award Dates

Grants must begin in late September 2022 or late February 2023 in line with the Austrian academic year and in order to attend the mandatory orientation. Teaching and research at the host institution will begin on October 1, 2022 or March 1, 2023.

American Studies—understood as the interdisciplinary study of American culture, history, and society—embraces different disciplines, methodologies, and fields of enquiry.

This award is open to candidates from all disciplines trained in American Studies or associated with American Studies programs at institutions in the United States as well as candidates from all disciplines who may not consider themselves American Studies specialists but who systematically bring their interests and expertise to bear topically on the study of the United States. Primary institutional affiliation may be with the departments of English and/or American Studies (Amerikanistik) and/or the Center for Inter-American Studies at the host institution, and/or with other departments, contingent upon the grantee's field of specialization. The cross-listing of courses is possible.

Teaching includes classroom teaching, as well as giving guest lectures, workshops, and seminars, and engaging in other related activities. Classroom teaching is typically at the undergraduate and graduate level, and courses may be designed by the scholar or prescribed by the host institution and may be taught or co-taught by the scholar. The teaching load varies by award, as well as the host institution. Scholars may also consult on building research capacity, advise graduate students, and assist with thesis advising.
