Grant Activity

The visiting scholar would be expected to undertake a defined programme of research in the School for (ideally) a 6-month period.  It would be expected that the scholar would participate in or attend most School activities during this period (e.g. seminars, conferences etc.) They would interact with other research staff in the School. The scholar will have an opportunity to give lectures/seminars in DIAS/local universities.

In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars will be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities‎.

While this award is open to any project in the disciplines listed above, there is interest in scholars who are in these particular specialty areas.

The Astronomy and Astrophysics section of the School of Cosmic Physics welcomes applications for Fulbright visiting fellowships in any of the following areas of research:
(a) The development of microwave kinetic induction detectors for astronomical purposes.
(b) Star and planet formation together with associated phenomena
(c) The dynamics of photo-ionisation regions and wind bubbles around massive stars
(d) Solar coronal physics and space weather.
The School of Cosmic Physics runs the historic Dunsink Observatory (where William Rowan Hamilton worked) and fellows may avail of accommodation in the Observatory.
