A flexible combination of teaching and research activities that entails at least two courses (classes meet once a week for 90 minutes) and may include advising or supervising advanced students. Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt is interested in scientists who seek to contribute to one of the following research programs/areas:

1. Karl Popper Kolleg “Modeling, Analysis, Simulation and Optimization of Discrete, Continuous, and Stochastic Systems with Applications in Business and Economics (MANSIO)”

Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt solicits applications with specialization in one or more of the research areas:

  • dynamical and stochastic systems,
  • Bayesian spatial-temporal prediction and design,
  • decentralized decisions,
  • mechanism and market design,
  • nonlinear and combinatorial optimization,
  • optimization and analysis of discrete structures,
  • regularization methods.

2. Karl Popper Kolleg “Networked Autonomous Aerial Vehicles” (NAV)

Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt solicits applications with specialization in one or more of the research areas:

  • Autonomous Navigation and Control with sub-areas particularly in
    • Multi-modal state estimation
    • Sensor fusion
    • Self-* (initialization, calibration, healing, ...)
  • Coordination and Mission Planning with sub-areas particularly in
    • Mission driven swarm organization
    • Task and environment aware (local) optimization
    • Cooperative relaying
  • Communications and Networking with sub-areas particularly in
    • Optimized data transmission
    • Decentralized data distribution
    • Large data representation
  • Network Synchronization with sub-areas particularly in
    • Aerial networking
    • Distributed time synchronization
    • Synch and swarm

The aim is to foster joint research, to support the supervision of PhD candidates and to provide advanced teaching within these thematic areas. Other areas within the context of Networked Autonomous Aerial Vehicles but tangential to the above topics are also of high interest.

The Karl Popper Doktorats- und Wissenschaftskolleg (KPK) advances collaborative research and education in the field of Networked Autonomous Aerial Vehicles (NAV) and makes Klagenfurt a hub in this emerging and disruptive technology. Groups from robotics, pervasive computing, mobile communications systems, multimedia systems, and other disciplines join forces to create an inspiring environment in which faculty members, PhD students, international research fellows, and world-leading labs and companies closely collaborate.

Active knowledge and innovation exchange opens novel perspectives and ensures the best preparation for students aiming at an R&D career in this exciting field. The structure of the program encompasses a cutting-edge research portfolio aiming for scientific excellence linked to a well-chosen and team-oriented education program. All participants are committed to common scientific goals by focusing on a realistic application scenario in autonomous 3D reconstruction with small-scale collaborative aerial vehicles. The international network is a key strength of the program, where 18 highly renowned experts and several outstanding research institutions and companies participate. Members of the doctoral school can therefore easily connect with the worldwide community, generate research at global scale, and obtain feedback from distinguished collaborators. The integrated quality control processes ensure continuous improvement.

The program significantly strengthens the university’s recently defined area of excellence Networked and Autonomous Systems and also fits well into the multi-disciplinary research cluster Self-Organizing Systems. It bundles and leverages the research activities of the involved AAU groups and establishes in combination with several researchers funded by other sources, including FFG and highly-competitive Horizon 2020 projects a doctoral school of at least 12 students. 3. Complex Systems / Self-organizing Systems

Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt is interested in scientists working in the interdisciplinary domain of complex systems and seeking to contribute to the cross-department research cluster on self-organizing systems. The university solicits applications with specialization in one or more of the following research areas:

  • Engineering and design methods of complex systems
  • Swarm intelligence
  • Transition phenomena
  • Incentive systems
  • Synchronization in complex systems
  • Decision making in complex systems
  • Cooperation
  • Biologically-inspired systems
  • Emergence
  • Evolutionary methods in complex systems
  • Complex systems in engineering (e.g., telecommunications, transport, robotics, smart cities, smart grids)
  • Complex systems in economics (e.g., market dynamics, micro-motives and organizational macro-behavior

4.Digital Age Research Center (D!ARC)

Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt is interested in scientists working in the interdisciplinary domain of „Humans in the Digital Age“ (HDA) who seek to contribute to the Digital Age Research Center (D!ARC) which is currently in the process of being set up. The university solicits applications with specialization in one or more of the following research areas:

  • Digitalization from a sociocultural perspective
  • Digitalization from a technical/engineering perspective
  • Anthropology of digitalization
  • Computational linguistics
  • Decision-making in a digital world
