Grant Activity

A flexible combination of teaching and research activities that entails at least two courses (classes meet once a week for 90 minutes) and may include advising or supervising advanced students. Format, content and level of the individual courses are negotiated with the host institution. Joint research with the host department is welcomed and appreciated.

While this award is open to any project in the disciplines listed above, there is interest in scholars who are in these particular specialty areas.

Digital Age Research Center (D!ARC)

Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt is interested in scientists working in the interdisciplinary domain of “Humans in the Digital Age” (HDA) who seek to contribute to the Digital Age Research Center (D!ARC). The university solicits applications with specialization in one or more of the following research areas: economics in a digital environment, education in a digital world, or ethics in a digital world.

1. Economics in a Digital Environment

Digitalization affects many areas of human life in individual, professional, and social contexts, and that it brings along profound processes of change. The specialization “economics in a digital environment” puts decision-making in the center of scientific attention and aims at analyzing the effects of digitalization on decision-making behavior from the perspective of economics. In the context of the digital revolution the following topics are of particular interest:

  • Behavioral economics with sub-areas, for example, in:
    • Control systems and mechanisms
    • Micro-economic theory
    • Nudge theory
    • Evolutionary psychology
  • Economics of consumer choice with sub-areas, for example, in:
    • Recommendation systems
    • Reputation systems
  • Economic adaptation and transformation with sub-areas, for example, in:
    • Autonomous economy
    • Innovation economics
  • Socioeconomics with sub-areas, for example, in:
    • Digital empowerment
    • Digital inclusion
  • Economics of strategy with sub-areas, for example, in:
    • Strategic planning, positioning, and sustaining competitive advantage
    • Business models
  • Energy economics with sub-areas, for example, in:
    • Utilization of energy resources and energy awareness
    • Energy applications in active and assisted living and their acceptance

The aim is to foster joint research, to support the supervision of PhD candidates, and to provide advanced teaching within these thematic areas. Energy applications in active and assisted living and their acceptance. [LB: not sure what this last line means]

 

2. Education in a Digital World

Including (but not limited to) one or more of the following research areas:

Digital media/technologies

  • as subjects of instruction
  • as methods of teaching
  • as phenomena to be reflected upon
  • as subjects which demand competencies to be acquired by all members of society
  • as subjects of discussion between teachers and learners, guardians and their children, science and practice

 

3. Ethics in a Digital World

Including (but not limited to) one or more of the following research areas:

  • Ethical aspects of digitalization and mediatization with regard to informatics
  • Contributions to the discussion about moral machines and ethical AI
  • Need and challenges for ethical cybersecurity research
  • Security as an aportic term
  • Responsible (engineering) innovation with a focus on ethics
  • Potentials for the organization and implementation of distributed or collective responsibility in the area of engineering and cybersecurity
