The School of Communication and Media Studies (ESCS-IPL), known as the premier college in Communications in Portugal, seeks to cover the main strands of Communication taught in Bachelor and Master’s degrees. ESCS includes these Departments:

  • Department of Audiovisual & Multimedia;
  • Department of Journalism;
  • Department of Advertising & Marketing;
  • Department of Public Relations & Organizational Communication,

The select scholar will research and debate subjects such as Digital Film Production, Business Model Journalism and Digital Strategic Communications.

The Fulbright Scholar from 2021-2022 will be hosted by the Department of Media and Journalism:

Programs Contents: Business models for Journalism (To create "value" in journalism; Robots and people in newsroom: complementary practices and business impact; New publics/audiences; Financial support; Independent journalism; Self- employment /freelance journalism)

Competencies: Learn how to keep journalism "valuable", workable and sustainable.

Target: Bachelor and Master students in Journalism

Number of students involved: approximately 50

Number of teaching hours/week: 6 hours

Starting dates are flexible: preferred starting months are October (first semester) or March (second semester), as agreed with the Portuguese host institution.

Special Features

The host will contribute with €750/month for housing expenses and will provide assistance in finding housing. 

The host institution will provide computer facilities, internet access and e-mail, office space and secretarial assistance.

The selected scholar will participate in scientific consultancy and collaboration with the host in order to delineate research strategies, define and prioritize actions towards the improvement of on-going projects and research areas, and/or the initiation of new lines or research.


The recipient of the grant will be expected to teach the course “Free Seminars” to the LL.M. in European and Transglobal Business Law, giving a United States' Law perspective. An average of 15 students is enrolled in this course every year.
