This grant offering is pending available funds

  • Specific grant requirements will be discussed and finalized with the host institution, but should include:
  • Teach specialized courses in and related to alternative energy technology.
  • Collaborate on teaching or research with department faculty (20-30 hrs/week).
  • Advise doctoral students on research projects (5-10 hrs/week).
  • Assist in establishing networking opportunities and exchanges with the grantee's home university (5-10 hrs/week).
  • The Distinguished Chair will be expected to give an inaugural lecture during the year.
  • Opportunities to give lectures or participate in academic activities at other Swedish universities and outside Sweden will be available and are encouraged.
  • Consult on curricula.
Grant Length
Either one semester (4.5 months) or two semesters (9 months); a nine month grant period is preferred.

One semester grants must begin in either September 2021 or January 2022.


Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden: Department of Energy and Environment, Department of Applied Mechanics, the Swedish Hybrid Center, other departments as appropriate.

Located on the west coast, Gothenburg is Sweden's second largest city and Scandinavia's largest port. Gothenburg has a population of 496,000 residents and almost 60,000 students in the area. Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg was founded in 1829. Study programs focus on technology, natural sciences and architecture. There are 10,600 students and 2,900 full-time positions, of which 1,900 are teachers and researchers. The university has a strong research base and intensive cooperation with the business and other stakeholders in society, through joint research as well as venture creation and research based commercialization. Key collaborator, such as The Volvo Group and Volvo Car Corporation, also located in Gothenburg, provide funding for some 170 doctoral students in all engineering disciplines. In 2013, Chalmers participated in 193 EU projects, attracted attention for their cutting edge research with quantum computers and carbon isotope C-12. Chalmers hosts EU largest research project, the Graphene flagship program. Chalmers has a particular strength in energy research including the "Energy Flagship" program on "Near-Term Pathways to a Sustainable Energy Future" and strategic cooperation with major energy related industries. While this award is open to any project in the disciplines listed above, there is interest in scholars who are in these particular specialty areas.

Alternative energy technology to include a broad range of fields.

Preferred specialization in one or more of the following fields by the host institution: vehicle technology and transportation (biofuels, battery technology, charging units, large-scale use of electric vehicles and lightweight carbon fiber technology) and power generation (design, control and grid integration of wind power and other intermittent energy sources eg solar pV, combustion and gasification of solid biofuels and separation of carbon dioxide in conjunction with combustion).

Specialization in at least one of these fields will increase the opportunity for productive and sustained collaboration. Other fields related to energy technology will also be considered and are open to direct discussion with the host institution.

Special Features

In addition to the monthly living allowance, a monthly housing allowance of up to SEK 15 000 ($1,600 USD) and a one-time round trip airfare for the grantee and accompanying dependents are also provided under the terms of the grant. Additional funds are available for academic research activities related to this Chair.

Teach and/or research in the proposed area of interest. Scholar proposals are accepted for any discipline at the postdoctoral level. The ratio of teaching vs. research and the number of courses to be taught is to be arranged between the scholar and the host institution.
