Award Activity

The Fulbright-Haaga-Helia Scholar Award enables U.S. scholars to undertake teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level and take part in research and development (RD) activities at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences. The award can be awarded for any field represented at Haaga-Helia.

The scholar will be a member of the teacher team in the respective competence area. At Haaga-Helia, a team teaching model is applied, and the scholar works closely with other lecturers. Scholar may be responsible for teaching a full study course or parts of courses depending on the work plan agreed. Even if the main role of the scholar is teaching, at Haaga-Helia, all lecturers are expected to take part in the RD activities. Taking part in RD activities can mean, for example, writing a publication together with Haaga-Helia faculty or contributing to a RD project that is running or planning a RD project in cooperation with Haaga-Helia faculty. The grant cannot be used for advancing one's own academic research.

Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) train professionals with emphasis on labor market needs and they conduct applied research and development which supports teaching and learning and promotes regional development in particular. The education in UAS emphasizes co-operation with the business, industry and service sectors.

Haaga-Helia has excellent facilities for teaching, learning and RD. Haaga-Helia SalesLab offers a completely new type of environment for improving and developing sales, customer engagements and interaction situations. The Fulbright-Haaga-Helia Scholar Award is jointly funded by the Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences and the Fulbright Finland Foundation (the Finnish Fulbright commission).

Scholars selected for this award can choose to:
  • Advise and/or mentor students
  • Assist in faculty, curriculum, and/or program development
  • Conduct a professional and/or artistic project
  • Conduct a research project designated by the host institution
  • Conduct a research project of the applicant’s choosing
  • Participate in a two-week group seminar
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses designated by the host institution
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses of the applicant’s choosing

Three to ten months

One-semester grants may begin in August/September 2022 or January 2023; two-semester grants must begin in August/September 2022.

Locations

Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences has a staff (including faculty) of 660 professionals and a student population of 11,000 undergraduates and graduates. It hosts over 1,000 international students. Haaga-Helia offers altogether 21 Bachelor programs and 9 Master programs. Nine Bachelor programs and 3 Master programs are offered in English. Haaga-Helia has campuses in Helsinki, Porvoo and Vierumäki.

Through education, research and development, Haaga-Helia prepares professionals for business and public sector. In education, closeness to practice is emphasized, and all activities reflect to realities of the marketplace. Haaga-Helia operates in close cooperation with industry, and has an extensive network of business partners. Haaga-Helia also promotes internationalization, and in terms of teacher and student mobility, it is the most international university of applied sciences in Finland. Haaga-Helia graduates go on to successful careers in broad range of organizations.

Special Features

Haaga-Helia provides the Scholar and his/her family with free housing. The Scholar will be provided with a monthly stipend, round-trip travel, and a supplemental accident and sickness benefit for the grant period.

Additionally, the Fulbright-Haaga Helia Scholar receives the full support services provided by the Fulbright Finland Foundation for all Fulbright grantees in Finland.

Teaching includes classroom teaching, as well as giving guest lectures, workshops, and seminars, and engaging in other related activities. Classroom teaching is typically at the undergraduate and graduate level, and courses may be designed by the scholar or prescribed by the host institution and may be taught or co-taught by the scholar. The teaching load varies by award, as well as the host institution. Scholars may also consult on building research capacity, advise graduate students, and assist with thesis advising.
