Fulbright Lectureship in Italian-American Studies at the University of Calabria

Award Activity

The Fulbright Scholar will be asked to teach the “Italian American Culture and Literature” course, which is the only existing course of its kind in the public university system in Italy. Together with the “Italian Diaspora Studies Seminar,” which promotes research, publications, and residential seminars, “Italian American Culture and Literature” is part of an outstanding cultural project that qualifies UniCal as the first university in Italy for the field of Italian Diaspora Studies.

The course is offered at the master's level. The syllabus must be agreed on with the university, with reading materials provided via pdf. Students will have to write a paper of 10 pages on an individual topic decided with the instructor.

Total teaching load: 60 hours (6 hours per week); average class size: 23/30 students

Other possible activities:

  • Student advising and tutorials
  • Research and Collaboration with peers
  • Teaching or guest lecturing at other university departments and other institutions in the city of affiliation of the scholar
  • Conference organization and participation both at the University of Calabria and at other institutions in the South of Italy.

Scholars selected for this award will be required to:
  • Advise and/or mentor students
  • Conduct a research project of the applicant’s choosing
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses designated by the host institution

Italian American Studies. This is an interdisciplinary field that intersects with History, Anthropology, Folklore, American Literature, Italian Literature, Cinema, Media, Music, Economy, Law, and more.

The University welcomes applications from scholars of any of these fields, and in particular of Italian Studies, English Literature, Anthropology, Gender Studies, Cinema and Media Studies, Music and Performing Arts, Diaspora Studies, Sociology, Working-Class Studies, Labor Studies, History, Memory and Heritage Studies.

Preference will be given to scholars who pursue intersectional approaches to Italian American literature and cinema.
