The award includes research and teaching at the University of Eastern Finland. Applicants are encouraged to contact the departments for more information.

In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars will be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary research or teaching activities‎.

Grants must begin in either August or September 2018 or January 2019.

The academic year runs from September through mid-May. No teaching is generally offered from June to August.


The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) is one of the largest universities in Finland. The university has two main campuses in the cities of Joensuu and Kuopio, located 400 kilometers northeast of Helsinki. UEF’s campuses are significant research and innovation centres, and in the close vicinity of the campuses, several national-level research institutes, e.g. the National Institute of Health and Welfare and the National Institute of Occupational Health as well as the Kuopio University Hospital, the European Forest Institute, technology parks and knowledge-based enterprises are housing their activities.

The city of Kuopio (founded 1775) is a modern, developing center of economic life, scientific knowledge, and technological expertise in Eastern Finland. A unique natural setting and a high quality of life make it an appealing place to live. It is the eighth largest city in Finland with about 120,000 inhabitants. The city of Joensuu (founded 1848) is a vibrant and growing high-tech center close to the Russian border. Joensuu is home of 58,000 inhabitants and there urban lifestyle and quiet rural areas live side by side.

The University of Eastern Finland is a multidisciplinary research university, which has recognized the following global challenges: “Aging, Lifestyles and Health” and “Environmental Change and Sufficiency of Natural Resources.” According to the UEF’s strategy, the university is seeking solutions through its scientific research and research-based education to these challenges.

At UEF, research in both health and environmental sciences is extremely multidisciplinary by nature. The field of health sciences comprises clinical medicine, molecular medicine, medical physics, pharmacy, nursing science, and research on health economics and management. The field of environmental sciences, covers a wide range of expertise not only in natural sciences, forestry, biology, environmental physics, environmental chemistry and environmental health, but also in social sciences, for example research on sustainable use of natural resources and environmental policy and law.

In 2016, UEF has been ranked #46 by QS and #63 by Times Higher Education among the world’s best young universities. In QS University Ranking by Subject, UEF was ranked #51-100 in Agriculture & Forestry and in Nursing, as well as #101-150 in Pharmacy and Pharmacology, #201-250 in Medicine, #251-300 in Biological Sciences and in Environmental Sciences (2016).

Special Features

The University of Eastern Finland will provide the grantee and his/her family with free housing and working facilities at the University. The grantee will be provided with a monthly grant, round-trip travel, and an accident and sickness benefits package for the grant period. The grantee will also be eligible, free of charge, to participate in a Fulbright Finland pre-approved summer school in Finland consisting of courses on Finnish language, culture and society, pending availability of suitable programs

The Fulbright Finland in Helsinki arranges a three-day orientation for scholars at the end of August, which scholars arriving for the fall semester are expected to attend. An orientation meeting may also be arranged for scholars arriving in January.

Conduct research and/or teach in any discipline represented at the University of Turku.

Applicants are encouraged to contact the host department, faculty or research program to work together in designing the grant activities. There is generally no teaching from June to August.
