Award Activity

The Fulbright SOAS University of London Award covers a three-month research project in any appropriate discipline at the institution.

SOAS is the only higher education institution in the UK specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East. With more than 300 academics dedicated to research and teaching in these areas, it has become one of the world’s leading institutions of its kind. SOAS’s research expertise is rooted in the political, social, economic, historical and cultural dynamics of Africa, Asia and the Middle East and their diasporas, which collectively account for over three-quarters of the world’s population. The SOAS campus is next to Senate House, the headquarters of the University of London, within the collegiate university's Bloomsbury estate in central London, one of the most vibrant cities in the world. SOAS is a short walk from many of London’s bars, cafes and world-famous social and cultural sights. The SOAS campus includes internationally recognised buildings like our Brunei Gallery, Japanese Rooftop Garden and the SOAS library, which is one of the five National Research Libraries in the UK.

Scholars selected for this award will be required to:
  • Conduct a research project designated by the host institution
  • Conduct a research project of the applicant’s choosing

Special Features

The scholar will have access to the SOAS library, which acts as the UK National Research Library for studies in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Grants must begin in January 2023 and must be held for a consecutive three-month period. Grantees will be expected to reside in Gordon Square for the duration of the fellowship and to play a full part in the life of the School.

Research includes activities involving scientific research, qualitative research, quantitative research, and practice-based research, including artistic research. Research can take place in locations such as the laboratory, the field, the archives, or an artist residency. It can be experimental, clinical, or applied. It can include examining policies, systems, theories, methods, interactions, and works of art and music, with the objective to evaluate or develop new knowledge or works. Quantifiable (tangible) outcomes can include publications (books, journal articles, scripts, etc.), conference presentations, artistic and musical compositions, exhibitions, performances, films, and patents.
