Conduct research in area of specialization in universities and research centers in the Grand Est region including the following cities: Strasbourg, Mulhouse, Reims, Metz, Nancy, Troyes, Châlons-en-Champagne, etc.

Areas of Interest

The region welcomes candidates in all disciplines (science and technology, life sciences and health, social sciences, and the humanities). Research projects that focus on the fields in which the region is especially strong are particularly appreciated: bioeconomy, health, energy transition and the environment, and artificial intelligence.

Language Proficiency Requirements

None, English is sufficient. However, feasibility of conducting the project must be demonstrated in the project statement.

Additional Language Requirement

While French language fluency is not required, for proposed research projects that require language fluency, the candidate should also submit Part One (self-evaluation) of the Language Proficiency Report.

The new Grand Est region (made up of the former regions of Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne, and Lorraine) has a strategic position in the heart of Europe, sharing a border with four countries (Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Switzerland). It is home to five universities, 35 engineering schools, six "competitiveness clusters," and a significant number of research centers. Its largest cities are Strasbourg, Mulhouse, Reims, Metz, Nancy, Troyes, and Châlons-en-Champagne.

In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars will be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities‎.

Stipend & Benefits

Stipend

€2,400-€2,800 (approx. $2,600-$3,100) per month depending on the city of placement. There is no allocation for accompanying dependents. Applicants are responsible for finding their own housing, although some host institutions may facilitate the process. The Euraxess network can also help with housing and local logistics.

Estimated Travel and Relocation Allowance

International travel allowance provided for grantee only. All research scholars receive a travel allowance of €1,200 (approx. $1,300).

Special Award Benefits

Visa fees will be waived for Fulbright grantees and their accompanying dependents. The Fulbright Commission will provide support and guidance for the visa process.

Final grant amounts will be determined prior to the start of the academic year and are subject to the availability of funds. The United States Department of State and the Fulbright Commission in the host country reserve the right to alter, without notice, participating countries, number of awards and allowances.

Summary

Approximately 20 Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar grants for research, teaching or a combination of the two in a wide range of fields.

This includes:
• Six grants for three to six months in any discipline
• One post-doctoral opportunity through the junior research/early career award with l'École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS)
• One grant in French Studies for three to six months
• Six to seven grants for research in our partner regions: Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Grand Est, Hauts-de-France
• Two one-semester Fulbright-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair grants
• One to two grants in migration studies at IMéRA -Institut d'Etudes Avancées Aix Marseille Université (Institute for Advanced Study of Aix-Marseille University)
• Two grants for research and/or teaching at CY Cergy Paris University

In addition, up to 12 International Education Administrators Seminar grants are offered.

Proposals for research projects will be evaluated not only for their scholarly, artistic or professional excellence, but also for their potential to increase mutual understanding and create future collaborations between France and the United States.

Research

Research includes activities involving scientific research, qualitative research, quantitative research, and practice-based research, including artistic research. Research can take place in locations such as the laboratory, the field, the archives, or an artist residency. It can be experimental, clinical, or applied. It can include examining policies, systems, theories, methods, interactions, and works of art and music, with the objective to evaluate or develop new knowledge or works. Quantifiable (tangible) outcomes can include publications (books, journal articles, scripts, etc.), conference presentations, artistic and musical compositions, exhibitions, performances, films, and patents.
