The Scholar is expected to co-teach a course in Media and Information Literacy (MIL) to first year students in the Communication Sciences Bachelor Program, at the University College Beder in Tirana. This course will be taught for the first time at an Albanian university in the academic year 2022-2023.  The course aims to analyze the goals and methods of different media industries, to identify the effects that media has on people, to understand the potential benefits and negative effects of content in the media, and to identify techniques to become more informed consumers of information on an individual and societal level. Students will develop the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a variety of forms. They will also develop critical skills that will empower them to effectively engage with traditional media and new technologies.
 

The scholar will also be asked to teach seminar classes related to MIL in the “News Writing and Reporting” course. In addition, the scholar will co-organize and co-teach a faculty development program offering 2-3 workshops on MIL, and an extra-curricular module with students in the departments of English, Islamic Studies, Education.  The scholar will also serve on the steering committee for an international scientific conference in Media and Information Literacy organized by the Department of Communication Sciences.

Scholars selected for this award will be required to:
  • Advise and/or mentor students
  • Assist in faculty, curriculum, and/or program development
  • Conduct a professional and/or artistic project
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses designated by the host institution

Beder University College started its academic activities during the 2011-2012 academic year and operates in compliance with the Albanian Law on Higher Education, offering studies in the first and second level (3+2) according to the Bologna Accord.
Beder University College has two faculties, the Humanities and Law faculty and the Technology and Business faculty.  It also has three research centers, and publishes the Beder Journal of Humanities, the Beder Journal of Educational Sciences, and the Albanian Journal of Law and Society.
Beder University College has numerous agreements with national and international universities and research centers and has partnered with them in organizing conferences, seminars, research projects, and exchange programs for students and academic staff. These include but are not limited to The White House and State Department university initiative P2P: Challenging Violent Extremism; JESSUP - Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition for law students; Interfaith dialogue - Academic cooperation with Muslim Community of Albania; and Scholas Occurrentes, an initiative aimed at young people in the world integrating public and private school students of all religions. 
Beder College University is home to several State Department Exchange alumni.

Teaching includes classroom teaching, as well as giving guest lectures, workshops, and seminars, and engaging in other related activities. The teaching load varies by award, as well as the host institution. Scholars may also consult on building research capacity, advise graduate students, and assist with thesis advising.
