Grant Activity

It is increasingly the case for researchers in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (AHSS) that traditional forms of dissemination alone are no longer effective for drawing attention to research results and achieving impact. In contemporary academic and funding environments, it is arguably becoming a requirement that research outputs are not limited to the monograph or academic journal, but that they impact more widely upon society, and are disseminated in more accessible and digestible ways than in the past. How might academics in AHSS respond to new environments of research dissemination?

The College of Arts, Celtic Studies, and Social Sciences in University College Cork seeks a Scholar with experience in the field of research impact, with particular emphasis on expertise in public engagement and the dissemination of research. The successful Scholar would be invited to engage in discussion with faculty and postgraduate students, exploring pioneering opportunities for increasing research impact and examining new methods of research dissemination. The Scholar would be encouraged to deliver events (lectures, seminars, workshops etc.) exploring research impact, external/public engagement, and innovative forms of research dissemination. The Scholar would also be encouraged to provide one-to-one meetings with staff and students who are seeking to increase the impact of their research through innovative forms of dissemination. These activities would consist of approximately two to four hours per week and would be aimed at staff and graduate students across the university, but especially in the area of AHSS.Exploring new forms of research dissemination is likely to be highly beneficial to staff and postgraduate students. Effectively used, forms such as online and/or open access publishing, blogging etc. have the potential to reach a wider audience, including non-academic demographics. Moreover, funding bodies are increasingly calling for greater imagination in the field of research dissemination, and making this a requirement in grant applications. In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange process, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars will be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary research or teaching activities‎.
