Award Activity

Host institutions welcome scholars to teach undergraduate level courses, or carry out a combination of teaching and research activities.

The student body is highly engaged and appreciates robust intellectual debate. As a Fulbright visiting professor or researcher you will have the opportunity to engage with well resourced institutions, and a highly diverse academic community to push the boundries of your chosen field. 

Awardess can teach undergraduate courses or teach undergraduate courses and conduct research in any area of specialization. Awardee responsibilities should be divided between teaching (70%) and research (30%). Awardees should expect to advise faculty on curriculum development and program design, and advise student research. Post will also provide opportunities for the awardee to share their expertise with local audiences and/or the media.

Scholars selected for this award will be required to:
  • Advise and/or mentor students
  • Assist in faculty, curriculum, and/or program development
  • Conduct a research project designated by the host institution
  • Conduct a research project of the applicant’s choosing
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses designated by the host institution
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses of the applicant’s choosing

Award Dates

Host institutions can only host scholars based on the academic year. The academic year in the UAE is from September to June. The calendar may be adjusted around Islamic holidays.

Any appropriate UAE institution. Applicants are strongly encouraged but not required to arrange an affiliation prior to submitting their application. Applicants may consider the following institutions and are welcome to develop their own institutional relationships:

Flex Description

The Flex Award is designed for scholars who require multiple visits to the host country. This option allows grants to be conducted over two to three short segments, preferably during the fall and/or spring semesters. Interested applicants should clearly indicate plans for Flex in their project statement, including a project timeline. Flex grantees may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host-country academic community.

Flex grant parameters:

  • Minimum length of the total grant is four months and the maximum is six months;
  • Minimum length for any grant segment is one month and the maximum is three months;
  • Two or three grant segments may be spread over one or two consecutive years; and
  • Flex awards are offered for teaching, teaching/research, and research grants.

Applicants must make a strong case for why the Flex option is required for their project. Generally, Flex grants should be used to for research projects that observe behavior or participation rates over time or are seasonal in nature (festivals, religious activities). Flex grants may also be used to complete teaching or combined teaching/research activities that require follow-up visits. Flex applicants should submit possible courses for consideration and/or cite all research locations in their applications.

During their grant period, Fulbright U.S. Scholars in the Middle East and North Africa region may apply for a short-term regional travel grant (five to 14 days) for participation in a variety of activities including faculty and student lectures, graduate or faculty seminars, curriculum development, public lectures, panel presentations, needs assessment, conferences, or some combination thereof.

Teaching includes classroom teaching, as well as giving guest lectures, workshops, and seminars, and engaging in other related activities. Classroom teaching is typically at the undergraduate and graduate level, and courses may be designed by the scholar or prescribed by the host institution and may be taught or co-taught by the scholar. The teaching load varies by award, as well as the host institution. Scholars may also consult on building research capacity, advise graduate students, and assist with thesis advising.
