Grant Activity

Conduct research in area of expertise. Projects may focus on contemporary China or be comparative in nature. Part of the research may be done in Hong Kong or Taiwan; see Locations for additional details.

In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars will be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities‎.

Grant Dates

Grants may begin any time after September 1, 2020. Grants must be completed by September 30, 2021. Flex grants must be completed by September 30, 2022.

Locations

Researchers are required to be affiliated with a local institution of higher education in mainland China during their grant term. The local host institution should have the capacity and official permission to host foreign students and scholars.

Applicants may spend up to 10 days of a three- to five-month grant, up to one month of a six- to eight-month grant or up to three months of a nine- to ten-month grant at research facilities in Hong Kong or Taiwan. Applicants proposing Flex may spend up to 10 days at research facilities in Hong Kong or Taiwan, but such travels may not occur in the first segment. All applicants proposing travel to Hong Kong or Taiwan should include this timeline in their project statements; additional letters of invitation for Hong Kong or Taiwan optional.

Flex Description

The Flex Award is designed for scholars who require multiple visits to the host country. This option allows grants to be conducted over short segments, preferably during the fall and/or spring semesters. Interested applicants should clearly indicate plans for Flex in their project statement, including a project timeline.

Flex grantees may be asked to give public talks, mentor students and otherwise engage with the host-country academic community.

Flex grant parameters:

• Minimum length of the total grant is four months and the maximum is six months;

• Minimum length for any grant segment is one month and the maximum is three months;

• Two or three grant segments may be spread over one or two consecutive years; and

• Flex awards are offered for research grants.

This award includes a travel allowance to guest lecture at other universities in China.

Fulbright East Asia Pacific Regional Travel Program

Fulbright Scholars in the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region have the opportunity to apply for funds to support short-term (3-14 days) travel to other countries in the EAP region for activities such as lectures, workshops, graduate or faculty seminars, master classes or recitals, curricular advising or panel presentations. EAP Regional Travel Program funding covers transportation only. Regional Travel Program activities/host sites should not be included in the initial Fulbright application. Scholars may pursue invitations for short-term activities in other EAP countries once notified that they have been selected for a Fulbright grant, and may only apply for travel program funds once they have actively started their Fulbright grant in their host country. Scholars on Flex grants are not eligible for the regional travel grant.
