Award Activity

Activities related to English language teaching (or training) are strongly preferred. TEFL teaching activities may include (but are not limited to):

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses;
  • Conduct training programs for senior English students, junior level English teachers and faculty;
  • Conduct workshops to build assessment capacity and/or research capacity to teacher trainees;
  • Assist in the development of programs and curricula, resource material development, testing and evaluation and program design and implementation.
Award Length
Three to 10 months; preference given to projects five or 10 months (one or two semesters).
Award Dates

One-semester grants may begin in September 2021 or February 2022; Two-semester grants must begin in September 2021.

Locations

Kazakhstan; Kyrgyz Republic; Tajikistan; Turkmenistan; or Uzbekistan. 

Please Note: Applicants should rank their countries by preference, and clearly indicate whether they are willing to consider alternative placements in Central Asia.

Flex Description

The Flex Award is designed for Scholars who require multiple visits to the host country. This option allows grants to be conducted over short segments, preferably during the fall and/or spring semesters. Interested applicants should clearly indicate plans for Flex in their project statement, including a project timeline. Flex grantees may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host-country academic community.

Flex grant parameters:

• Minimum length of the total grant is four months and the maximum is six months;

• Minimum length for any grant segment is one month and the maximum is three months;

• Two or three grant segments may be spread over one or two consecutive years; and

• Flex awards are offered for research grants.

Applications in the following disciplines will be prefered: TEFL, Education, Applied Linguistics, and English for Special Purposes (ESP). Specializations outside of these fields (i.e Journalism or American History) must clearly identify how their projects will incorporate ESL concepts into their projects.

Special Features

South and Central Asia Fulbright Regional Travel Grant

During their grant period, Fulbright Scholars in the South and Central Asia (SCA) region may apply for a regional travel grant to engage in a variety of activities at academic institutions or non-profit organizations in eligible SCA countries (India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Nepal, Republic of the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan).  Activities that U.S Scholars may engage in include: faculty and student lectures, graduate or faculty seminars, conferences, curriculum development, public lectures, panel presentations, needs assessment, or some combination thereof. Scholars in the arts may be invited to give master classes or recitals, participate in exhibitions or workshops, or consult with cultural institutions. Activities may not include research. This grant will cover travel to and from the destination and lodging may be offered by the hosting institution. Scholars may only apply for this grant once in country on their Fulbright grant. As funds are limited, Scholars are limited to one such travel grant.

South and Central Asia Fulbright Midyear Conference

With funding provided by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the U.S.-India Educational Foundation (the Fulbright Commission in India) invites eligible Fulbright Scholars in the South and Central Asia region to attend the annual South and Central Asia Fulbright Midyear Conference in India (usually held in February or March). The conference is an opportunity for current Fulbright U.S. Scholars who are on their Fulbright grants in the SCA region at the time of the conference to gather to discuss each other’s work and educational exchange issues and to invite suggestions for the future development and enhancement of the Fulbright Program. Financial assistance to attend the conference is provided as an additional Fulbright grant benefit.

Teaching includes classroom teaching, as well as giving guest lectures, workshops, and seminars, and engaging in other related activities. Classroom teaching is typically at the undergraduate and graduate level, and courses may be designed by the scholar or prescribed by the host institution and may be taught or co-taught by the scholar. The teaching load varies by award, as well as the host institution. Scholars may also consult on building research capacity, advise graduate students, and assist with thesis advising.
