Award Details
Award Activity

Host institutions welcome scholars activities related to English language teaching (or training), as a primary assignment. The award is intended for direct TEFL teaching activities and may include (but not limited to):

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses (two to three courses per semester), with an emphasis on English language teacher training;
  • Conduct training programs for senior English students, junior level English teachers and faculty;
  • Conduct workshops to build assessment capacity and/or research capacity to teacher trainees;
  • Assist in the development of programs and curricula, resource material development, testing and evaluation, and program design and implementation.

Final activities and courses determined in consultation with the host institution.

Scholars selected for this award can choose to:
  • Advise and/or mentor students
  • Assist in faculty, curriculum, and/or program development
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses designated by the host institution
  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses of the applicant’s choosing

Award Dates

The academic year in Jordan is September through June. Grants should begin in September 2022 (for six or 10 month grants) or January 2023 (for six month grants only). Grantees with September start dates are expected to arrive in Jordan for orientation, tentatively scheduled during the first week of September. Grantees with January start dates will receive a focused orientation program upon arrival.

Areas of Interest

Only applications in the following disciplines will be considered: TEFL, Education, Applied Linguistics, and English for Special Purposes (ESP). Specializations will vary, but in general, scholars with one or more of the following specializations will be preferred:

Teaching English as a Foreign Language:

  • English teaching pedagogies and techniques
  • TEFL curriculum development and design
  • English for special purposes or English for academic purposes course design
  • Computer-assisted language learning or other technology-enhanced teaching and learning techniques
  • Teaching methods of English writing, listening/speaking, or reading
  • Methods of assessment and evaluation of English language learners
  • Structure of English
  • History of English
  • American, British or World English literature in the ESL classroom

Applied Linguistics:

  • Second language acquisition
  • Language analysis (theoretical and/or practical grammar, phonology, morphology, syntax, lexis)
  • Sociolinguistics
  • Psycholinguistics
  • Discourse and/or conversation analysis


  • Translation studies
  • Intercultural or cross-cultural communication
  • Bilingualism
Special Features

During their grant period, Fulbright U.S. Scholars in the Middle East and North Africa region may apply for a short-term regional travel grant (seven to 14 days) for participation in a variety of activities including faculty and student lectures, graduate or faculty seminars, curriculum development, public lectures, panel presentations, needs assessment, conferences, or some combination thereof.

Activity Type

Teaching includes classroom teaching, as well as giving guest lectures, workshops, and seminars, and engaging in other related activities. Classroom teaching is typically at the undergraduate and graduate level, and courses may be designed by the scholar or prescribed by the host institution and may be taught or co-taught by the scholar. The teaching load varies by award, as well as the host institution. Scholars may also consult on building research capacity, advise graduate students, and assist with thesis advising.

Awards are open to individuals who have more than seven years of experience in a particular profession.
