Scholars proposals invited to work on water security research at the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) at the Doha-based Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU). Scholar's research will focus on aquifer mapping, groundwater mapping, and other water security related issues for the region. This grant supports the Statement of Intent signed by NASA/JPL and HBKU. The project may lead to the launch of a satellite-borne radar imaging technology that can be used to map underground aquifer in Qatar, with wide applications for understanding climate change on our planet and water traces on arid planets like Mars.  

Scholars selected for this award will be required to:
  • Conduct a research project designated by the host institution

Flex Description

Timeline for flex segments should be determined in collaboration with the host institution, QEERI.

The Flex Award is designed for scholars who require multiple visits to the host country. This option allows grants to be conducted over two to three short segments, preferably during the fall and/or spring semesters. Interested applicants should clearly indicate plans for Flex in their project statement, including a project timeline. Flex grantees may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host-country academic community.

Flex grant parameters:

  • Minimum length of the total grant is four months and the maximum is six months;
  • Minimum length for any grant segment is one month and the maximum is three months;
  • Applicants may propose only one, one-month segment; and,
  • Grant segments may be spread over two consecutive years.

During their grant period, Fulbright U.S. Scholars in the Middle East and North Africa region may apply for a short-term regional travel grant (five to 14 days) for participation in a variety of activities including faculty and student lectures, graduate or faculty seminars, curriculum development, public lectures, panel presentations, needs assessment, conferences, or some combination thereof. Scholars who apply for the Flex award are ineligible for the Regional Travel Program.

Research can take place in locations such as the laboratory, the field, the archives, or an artist residency. It can be experimental, clinical, or applied. It can include examining policies, systems, theories, methods, interactions, and works of art and music, with the objective to evaluate or develop new knowledge or works. Quantifiable (tangible) outcomes can include publications (books, journal articles, scripts, etc.), conference presentations, artistic and musical compositions, exhibitions, performances, films, and patents.
